Work sharing provides employers with an alternative to layoffs when they are faced with a temporary decline in business. O of laying off a portion of the workforce to cut costs, an employer may reduce the hours and wages of all employees or a particular group of workers.

Workers with reduced hours and wages are w for pro-rated unemployment benefits to supplement their paycheck. Because work l is voluntary, employers can make decisions about participation in the program based on their unique circumstances. A firm facing a 20 percent reduction in production might normally lay off one-fifth of its work force.
